Those who have been following the national press in the past few weeks will have heard the stories of the 26,000 students without a place at a university who wanted one and of a squeeze on the number of students being able to get into top universities. Thankfully, due to Holyport College’s best ever set of A level results, we have been able to significantly buck this trend.
One starting point for the UK is the Russell Group (RG) which is a list of 24 elite research universities that offer the most competitive courses. And whilst later on I detail our RG percentage it’s worth noting that there are a number of universities that are not members of the Russell Group but are highly, if not more competitive. Loughborough (the 7th best University in the UK for 2022-2023 according to the Complete University Guide) and Bath (the 8th best by the same league table) are not Russell Group universities, but getting into either would certainly be considered a highly worthy achievement as well as a number of other, so-called, ‘Russell Group Plus’ universities.
On these measures we currently have over 50% of students going to the Russell Group and over 72% going to the RG+. We have students in for subjects such as Medicine, Engineering, Psychology, Politics and IR, Economics, Law and many other highly ranked courses.
In addition to Oxford and Cambridge places, we have our first students going to Edinburgh University as well as the LSE. Lots are off to Kings and Loughborough is our most popular destination this year. Cardiff remains a popular destination too.
The variety of courses which our alumni will be studying at top universities really is astounding. Ultimately so long as students are happy with their choices, doing a course that they want to do – that is the main thing.
